The Parish of Our Lady of Good Counsel,. Ballyboden, welcomes back Frs. Greg, Peter and Niall for a celebratory Mass expressing the thankfulness and appreciation of all the parishioners for the huge contribution that they collectively made to the parish between 1993-2005.

Fr. Greg Howard, O.S.A.  Fr. Peter Haughey, O.S.A.    Fr. Niall Coghlan, O.S.A.

The celebrations began with Mass at 6.30 p.m. The church was packed and everyone was eagerly looking forward to meeting our three wonderful priests.

They arrived separately, each one greeting people, nodding and smiling as they made their way to the sacristy.

The beginning of Mass saw them flanked by a large number of Altar Servers as they processed up the aisle to the strains of Christ be Beside Me.

Christ on my left hand,
Christ all around me,
shield in the strife.
Christ in my sleeping,
Christ in my sitting,
Christ in my rising,
light of my life.

Blessed be God! Blessed be God!
Blessed be God forever! Amen

Communion Hymn: 1. O Lord All The World
Words and Music: Patrick Appleford.

O Lord all the world belongs to you
And you are always making all things new.
What is wrong you forgive and the new life you give
Is what’s turning the world upside down.

The world’s only loving to its friends
But you have brought us love that never ends.
Loving enemies too and this loving with you
Is what’s turning the world upside down.

Communion Hymn: 1. (continued)

This world lives divided and apart.
You draw us all together and we
start
In your body to see that in
fellowship we
Can be turning the world upside down.

O Lord all the world belongs to you
And you are always making all things new.
Send your Spirit on all in your Church whom you call
To be turning the world upside down.

Communion Hymn: 2. Lead Kindly Light

Refrain: Lead, kindly Light, amid the gloom of evening.
Lord, lead me on! Lord, lead me on!
On through the night! On to your radiance!
Lead, kindly Light! Lead, kindly Light.

Verse 1: (solo) The night is dark, and I am far from home,
Direct my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.
So lead me onward, Lord, and hear my plea.

Refrain.

Verse 2: (solo) Not always thus, I seldom looked for you,
I loved to choose and seek my path alone.
In spite of fear, my pride controlled my will.
Remember not my past, but lead me still.

Refrain.

Recessional: How Great Thou Art

1. O Lord, my God,
when I in awesome wonder
consider all the works
thy hand hath made,
I see the stars,
I hear the rolling thunder,
thy pow’r throughout
the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul,
my Saviour God, to thee:
how great thou art,
how great thou art.
Then sings my soul,
my Saviour God, to thee:
how great thou art,
how great thou art.

2. When through the woods
and forest glades I wander
and hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees;
when I look down
from lofty mountain grandeur,
and hear the brook,
and feel the gentle breeze.

Then sings my soul,
my Saviour God, to thee:
how great thou art,
how great thou art.
Then sings my soul,
my Saviour God, to thee:
how great thou art,
how great thou art

James Breslin (Chairperson of the Parish Team) opened the proceedings by greeting our three guests of honour. Daire Keogh (former member of the Parish Team) gave us a lovely, lively, witty homily.

He acknowledged the huge contribution made by all the priests in turn:

Fr. Greg for his great leadership as former Parish Priest, for his great initiative as he decorated his church, prepared his parishioners for a wonderful televised Mass last February and co-ordinated the Railings and Grounds project. Mention was also made of Fr. Greg as a great people person. His spirit of care and support for all his parishioners was admirable.

Fr. Peter was given tribute for his prompt hospital visitations (he even made it just after the ambulance!) and for his reverence and commitment to his ministry as a priest.

Fr. Niall was acknowledged for his work with the youth and for his great enthusiasm as he went about his tasks as a priest.

Fr. Pádraig was referred to as our ‘recycled parish priest’; a comment which Fr. Pádraig thoroughly enjoyed!

Just before the end of Mass, the three priests were presented with beautiful memory books in which parishioners had written messages of thanksgiving and best wishes.

The party then began over in the school and everyone got a chance to greet their renowned former priests. A truly wonderful time was had by all.

Fr. Peter, Fr. Greg, Fr. Niall Noreen and Jack O’Farrell enjoy the party! Three lovely priests pose together just before the balloon fight!!!
